Biography

Summary
Voi escaped a life of absolute shelter and crushing expectations for the dangers and promises of a wide unknown galaxy controlled by the Empire.

Early Life
Voi is the only child of the leader of Glee Anselm's most powerful crime syndicate. His father died under suspicious circumstances while he was still a tadpole, and he has been raised by a protective yet unavailable mother... or rather by the people she assigned to raise him. Even his closest emotional connection, his sworn brother Maas, was assigned to be his childhood friend when they had both barely grown legs, and was at the same time raised to eventually become his personal bodyguard, rather than genuine family.
Little Voi spent his entire childhood on the grounds of a heavily protected and hidden compound, with constant lessons from ever-changing teachers about all topics necessary to one day become the most powerful man on the planet.
There were several attempts on the boy's life even at that young age, but all were thwarted before he could come to harm. Physical harm at least.

Awakening
No matter how well-groomed, no child will always want to go to classes and follow instructions. Barely into his tailless years, Voi became increasingly resentful of his lessons, and started to hide from his teachers, needing to be chased down by his servants or Maas, which only increased his resistance.
One fateful day, he was hiding from his logic teacher with such fervent rejection, when the teacher rounded in on his clumsily chosen hiding spot, his childish mind was convinced he was in genuine danger... and when the teacher looked directly at him, they did not seem to see, their attention drifting elsewhere as if rebuffed.
The incident remained in little Voi's mind, and when it repeated a few weeks later, and then again at another opportunity, the boy realised he had, somehow, acquired an unnatural ability.

The Journal
Unwilling to reveal his advantage to anyone, Voi was forced to come to terms with his new power by himself and in silence. He honed the ability over the next years, subtly and patiently so as to not draw attention to it, until he was capable of using it on demand and against more than one person at once.
At the same time, he began to search the vast Riptide archives for any information about this power, any indication that he was not the only one capable of such feats... and finally, after many years, he found a single clue. Tucked away as if forgotten among the family records he discovered a journal, written in his family's unique shorthand. While the author did not identify themselves, they described in great depths their time with an alien that had crashlanded on the shores of Glee Anselm... and who had a collection of strange abilities, among them the power to hide oneself from the sight of others.
The journal has been in Voi's possession since, and read from cover to cover hundreds of times.

Relationships

Veilnas Carva
Having left his home specifically to learn more about the Force, Voi considers it incredible luck that he crossed paths with the Jedi. (Though he is slowly coming around to considering the will of the Force.) It takes him some effort to ignore his deeply-ingrained distrust of aliens and outsiders around Veil, but he considers the risk worth it… Veil is a patient, steady and open-minded mentor in his eyes, and quite obviously has much to teach that he actually wants to learn.

Vila Oruka
The leader of Riptide, the (at least in her conviction) most powerful person on Glee Anselm, is a protective and generous but nearly entirely absent mother to Voi. She has afforded her only son only the best of the best guards, teachers and droid staff, and only a handful of days every year of her personal time. Voi's feelings toward her are unsurprisingly complicated. He understands her unique position, and appreciates the ways in which she expresses their familial bond. But it is hard to actually love someone you barely know.

Maas Ashika
Having been raised beside him, Maas is the closest thing to a sibling Voi could imagine, and he fully thinks of him as his brother. But this brotherhood does not negate the Riptide loyalty instilled in the Ashika, and Voi knows Maas will never stop trying to bring him home, even against his will. Is someone still your brother if he is also the hand of your jailer?

Riptide

Riptide consists of five major families and several subordinate families and organisations. The largest criminal organisation by numbers and influence on Glee Anselm, Riptide's power is primarily ensured through flexibility, patience and diversity. The majority of its illegal activity lies in drug trade and fencing of numerous goods, but they have near equal involvment in legal and semi-legal business dealings and law making. The philosophy underlying all of Riptide's activity is that everyone wants something bad enough to give up their own power to obtain it, therefor true power is in the hand of the one that supplies it.

The Families
Five families are at the head of Riptide, though one of them stands above the others. The families are at once close allies and bitter rivals, marriages and partnerships between different family members as common as schemes and sabotage. All family members, regardless of their actual position in the syndicate, are highly educated and extensively trained in their specific fields. The exact nature of each family's activities, authorities and capabilities are on a strict need to know basis, and additions of new family members from someone not of the five are unheard of.

The families, and Riptide as a result, are intensely xenophobic. Non-Nautolans can never be more than lowly members of Riptide, and only Glee Anselm-born and -raised Nautolans can ever become lieutenants.

The tattoo
Riptide membership is marked with a luminescent tattoo of the Riptide symbol. It's placement depends on the member's place in the hierarchy and structure. The tattoo can be removed and reapplied with a specific technique in accordance with changes in status.
- Members of the five families carry it on the arm, the closer to the hand, the higher their rank.
- Lieutenants —which are chosen by but are not members of the Five— carry it on the leg, the closer to the foot, the higher the rank.
- Common Riptide members carry it on the torso, and while there are no official rules to denote further hierarchy, an unspoken expectation exists that a placement on the shoulderblades marks great achievements.
- Non-Riptide allies may be temporarily marked on the throat, if a visible proof of their allegiance is required for a specific situation.
